As the High Sheriff of the West Midlands, I had the opportunity to visit Rushall to learn about the impressive progress of Project Phoenix. Launched six months ago, by Harjit, a local businessman, the project is a brilliant community collaboration which looks to provide structured opportunities for young people particularly after schools and at weekends and holiday periods. So far it’s involved over 25 local organisations annd sporting clubs all working together for the betterment of young people which will ultimately make their community a better and safer place to live. Currently, the project covers Brownhills, Pelsall, Shelfield and Rushall, with recent expansions into Shire Oak and Walsall Wood.
Project Phoenix began with a small capital investment from Walsall Council and they have now received additional local funding and Harj has himself personally funded partof this outreach work. A significant portion of this funding has been allocated to six youth-based projects through MADL which is rhe charity arm of Nisa. It is heartening to see such an investment in our young people and the positive outcomes that are being achieved.Thank you to Harjit and Oli for their commitment to this initiative designed and operated by their community. This is a wonderful example of community cohesion.
