Today, as High Sheriff of the West Midlands, I had the honour of attending the official opening of the new Sea Cadets Midlands Boat Station at Edgbaston Reservoir. This state-of-the-art facility will also serve as a watersports hub, providing young people with opportunities in dinghy sailing, paddlesports, rowing and power boating.
The Boat Station will be the new home for the Birmingham Vernon Sea Cadets Unit where they deliver dedicated training in first aid, marine engineering and leadership skills. It is a much needed resource for over 1,500 cadets from 37 units across the Midlands allowing them to access water based activities closer to home.
The event was graced by HRH The Princess Royal, Admiral of the Sea Cadet Corps, along with His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of the West Midlands, Derrick Anderson CBE, and the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, CouncillorKen Wood. It was inspiring to see around 100 sea cadets and many volunteers and dignitaries come together to celebrate the grand opening.
The Midlands Boat Station will also serve as a brilliant community hub for the neighbouring community and wider West Midlands region. I look forward to seeing the positive impact this facility will have on young people in the West Midlands for many years to come.
