High Sheriff Events

Alongside Magistrates Tanya and Mia, I visited Joseph Leckie School in Birmingham to engage with the sixth form students about the roles of the High Sheriff and Magistrates.
We started the session with an introduction to the role of the High Sheriff, emphasising my duties in supporting the judiciary and promoting community engagement. I shared personal anecdotes about my experiences throughout the year, including my involvement with local charities and initiatives aimed at fostering community cohesion.
Magistrates Tanya and Mia provided an informative overview of the magistracy, detailing their roles in the justice system, the types of cases they handle, and the significance of their work. They also addressed the recruitment of magistrates and encouraged students to consider this as a potential career path, highlighting the importance of having diverse voices within the judiciary.
It was inspiring to see their enthusiasm for understanding the workings of the legal system and their interest in civic responsibilities.
Thank you to Evadne and Joseph Leckie School for hosting us, as well as to Magistrates Tanya and Mia for their invaluable contributions to the discussion. I believe that initiatives like this play a crucial role in educating young people about the law and encouraging them to take an active role in their communities.
Some written feedback given by the students.
“It was a great experience for us, especially learning about the experiences of the High Sheriff. It is amazing to see that he was able to recover and contribute to his community to support people who need it. Thank you very much for coming and sharing your experiences with us!”
“The magistrates were so welcoming and encouraged us to look into what they do further and possibly become magistrates in the future. The interactive activities that they did with us were also very informative and they actively engaged with us. We really enjoyed this event.”
“It was so inspiring to meet the High Sheriff, who has overcome so much adversity in his life. It represented the value of hard work as well as giving back to your community and we all learnt a valuable lesson from him. We want to thank him for visiting our school”
