Last night I attended an event to celebrate the opening of a larger centre Smart Works Birmingham centre in Digbeth. This is a fantastic milestone for the charity dedicated to empowering women to return to work. It was wonderful to join Deputy Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Heidi Doughty OBE TD DL, Chair Alison Armstrong and Centre Manager Ann Powell for the launch event.
As High Sheriff of the West Midlands, I had the privilege of delivering the keynote speech to all of the attendees. I discussed the vital role of our community in supporting initiatives that promote social cohesion and help those most in need. It was uplifting to witness the growth and impact of this remarkable organisation since my last visit.
The new centre will serve as a vital hub for supporting unemployed women across the West Midlands by offering free work outfits, personalised styling sessions and professional interview coaching. With the capacity to support 1,200 women each year this space will truly enhance the charity’s mission and future proof their ability to achieve their ambitious plans.
Ann Powell highlighted the life-changing impact of employment for women, providing confidence, security and a sense of purpose. I am proud to support and endorse the incredible work being done by Smart Works Birmingham which has already transformed the lives of over 4,000 women since its inception in 2016.
