High Sheriff Award

Alice Bowen

We are proud to recognise Alice Bowen as a recipient of the High Sheriff Award for her remarkable actions during a traumatic incident in November last year. On this day, Alice’s neighbour was involved in an unfortunate accident which was witnessed by his family members.   The event was harrowing and left many in shock.

Alice, who lives next door to the patient, immediately sprang into action alongside her father, a trained first aider. They quickly assessed the situation, with Alice’s father taking control of the scene while Alice provided invaluable support. She fetched essential medical items and assisted in maintaining the patients airway until paramedics arrived.

During the chaos, Alice’s compassion extended beyond first aid. Recognising the distress of the patient’s family, she provided comfort to those around her. She brought footwear to a family member who had been left barefoot in the commotion, made sure they had a comforting drink, and helped look after young children, reassuring them that everything would be alright.

Alice’s involvement did not go unnoticed, and her actions reflected the maturity, calmness, and composure expected of a member of St. John Ambulance. Her dedication to helping others in their time of need exemplifies the spirit of community service and makes her a true asset to her family and the wider community.

This incident marked Alice’s first experience with trauma, and she handled it with an impressive level of professionalism and care. The patient was later placed in a medical coma to secure his airway, underwent immediate surgery to relieve brain pressure, and is now on the road to recovery, thanks in part to Alice’s quick thinking and support.

Her commitment to helping others and her aspirations to become a paramedic one day reflect not only her character but also the values we strive to promote in our community.
