High Sheriff Award

Shirley Mallon

Shirley Mallon has served as a trustee for the Birmingham Christmas Shelter for the past 12 years, dedicating her time and energy to this vital local charity. Since its inception in 1974, the shelter has provided a warm, free place to stay and eat for homeless and lonely individuals during the Christmas season. While many organizations shut down, the Birmingham Christmas Shelter opens its doors for four days, running a 24-hour operation from December 24th to 28th in a repurposed school.

Shirley oversees the entire operation, coordinating planning meetings throughout the year, and her enthusiasm and leadership are key to its success. Last year alone, the shelter welcomed over 200 different guests daily, serving 2,500 hot meals and providing essential services such as showers, clothing, haircuts, and foot care. With the help of more than 400 volunteers, who selflessly give up their Christmas, Shirley ensures that the shelter runs smoothly and efficiently, relying entirely on donations and fundraising to operate.
