High Sheriff Events

In May, I visited Aching Arms in Halesowen, a charity dedicated to supporting families who have experienced the devastating loss of a baby. Through the simple but powerful gift of a comfort bear, alongside ongoing emotional support, they ensure that no parent feels alone in their grief.

Hearing Sharon and Helen share their own personal stories of loss was deeply moving. Their courage in using lived experience to support others is at the heart of the organisation’s work, helping hundreds of families navigate grief with empathy, understanding and practical guidance.

What particularly resonated with me was the role of employers. Aching Arms provides specialist training to help organisations respond with sensitivity, support staff through bereavement, and create a culture where loss is recognised rather than overlooked. The reality is that almost every workplace will be touched by this kind of loss.

Perhaps the most profound reflection, however, was a broader one that loss takes many forms. For those unable to have children, the sense of grief can be equally deep, yet often less visible.

This visit was a powerful reminder that compassion, understanding and simple human kindness can make an enormous difference in people’s lives.
