High Sheriff Events

It was a privilege to attend the farewell to the Rt Revd Dr Michael Ipgrave, the 99th Bishop of Lichfield, as he brought his ten years of dedicated service to the Diocese of Lichfield to a close.

Over the past decade, Bishop Michael has given so much to the diocese and to the many communities, churches and people within it. His ministry has taken him across Staffordshire, the Black Country and North Shropshire, meeting people from all walks of life and offering his time, support and guidance.

It was particularly special to hear so many kind words about Bishop Michael and his wife, Julia, during the farewell. They have both played such an important part in the life of the diocese, welcoming people into Bishop’s House and offering friendship and hospitality to so many. It was clear from the warmth of the tributes just how much they are valued and how greatly they will be missed.

Bishop Michael has spoken about being inspired throughout his time in Lichfield by the example of St Chad, particularly his kindness, friendliness and humility. Those qualities have clearly resonated throughout his ministry and the difference he has made to the congregation and wider diocese will be felt for many years to come.

The farewell was understandably a mixture of celebration and sadness. It was wonderful to reflect on ten years of service and the many lives touched during that time, while also recognising that the diocese is saying goodbye to a Bishop and a couple who have become such an important part of its community.

I would like to wish Bishop Michael and Julia every happiness for the next chapter. They leave Lichfield with the gratitude and warmest wishes of so many people, and I know they will be greatly missed.
