I was delighted to join the Assistant High Commissioner of Bangladesh, Deputy Lieutenant Dawn Ward, The Lord Mayor of Birmingham and Mihaela Savu, Consul General of Romania in Birmingham in Victoria Square to raise the flag on the occasion of the National Day of Bangladesh.
There are over 50,000 people who live in Birmingham and a further 30,000 people in the wider west midlands who form part of the British / Bangladeshi community and a number of speakers highlighted the positive contribution that they make across a wide range of areas in our County.
In my role as High Sheriff, with my principle focus being on the Justice system, I noted that the Senior Presiding Judge on the Midlands circuit, who was appointed to this role on 1 January 2026 is British / Bangladeshi and that he had previously been the first person from the community to appointed to the High Court back in 2017.
