It was an honour to join the Mayor of Wolverhampton, veterans, representatives and members of the local community for a poignant flag-raising ceremony to mark VJ Day.
VJ Day is an important moment in our national history, marking the end of the Second World War and giving us the opportunity to remember all those who served and sacrificed, particularly those who fought in the Far East. The ceremony was a thoughtful and moving occasion, providing time to reflect on the courage, resilience and dedication of a generation who gave so much in the service of others.
I was privileged to lay a wreath as part of the commemorations, paying my respects to those who lost their lives, those who returned home forever changed by their experiences, and the families and communities who supported them.
Occasions such as this are so important in ensuring that these stories are not forgotten. It was particularly meaningful to see people come together in Wolverhampton to remember the sacrifices made and to recognise the lasting debt of gratitude we owe to all those who served.
My sincere thanks to the Mayor of Wolverhampton and his team for their warm welcome and for organising such a dignified and meaningful ceremony. It was a privilege to stand alongside so many others in remembrance and reflection.
