I spent a very informative morning with the Driver Training School for West Midlands Police to learn more about the work that they undertake. This included observing training for officers in rapid response to incidents and then the more specialised training for those involved in pursuits.
I was particularly struck by the huge focus on risk assessment at all times in minimising the dangers to the public, as well as the coordination of various specialist units to deal with the more complex matters.
I also spoke to the Driver Standards Unit who make extensive use of technology to continually monitor adherence to the training, as well as investigating incidents, and then provide input to the ongoing training that is given to officers.
